Started in 1991, the annual U.S. National Toboggan Championships is the only organized traditional wooden toboggan race in the country, and possibly the world. Originally built in 1936, the Jack Williams Toboggan Chute is located in Camden, Maine, at the Camden Snow Bowl, a municipally-owned ski mountain and year-round recreation area.
The 2026 Toboggan Nationals hosts 400 toboggan teams racing in several divisions over two days: Saturday, Feb. 7, and Sunday, Feb. 8. Team check-in, toboggan inspections and practice runs (conditions permitting) will be held on Friday, Feb. 6, from noon to 7 p.m. in Tobogganville.
There are three divisions of traditional toboggan team racing, including 2-Person, 3-Person and 4-Person. There is also an Experimental division for non-traditional toboggans, which are made of non-traditional materials, weigh more than 50 pounds or otherwise do not meet the Official Rules for things like length and design. All toboggans must be inspected and meet safety requirements to run in the toboggan chute. Toboggans are also not allowed to have coatings or finishes (ex: wet, oily, etc.) that will affect the toboggan chute and/or change chute conditions for other teams. Toboggans are available for teams to share - details on where and how to use given at team check-in Friday (noon-7 p.m.) or Saturday morning (7 a.m.-noon).
